Egypt Investigates Unauthorized Mobile SIM Registrations

Egyptian authorities have launched an investigation into cases involving mobile SIM cards reportedly registered using citizens’ National ID information without their knowledge or consent.

The issue raises important concerns about identity protection, personal data, telecom security, and fraud prevention.

A mobile number is no longer used only for calls and messages. It can be connected to:

  • 🔐 One-time passwords (OTPs)
  • 🏦 Bank accounts and digital wallets
  • 📱 WhatsApp and social media accounts
  • 📧 Email account recovery
  • 👤 Digital services linked to a person’s identity

If someone registers a mobile line using another person’s identity information without permission, that number could potentially be used for fraud, impersonation, or other illegal activities.

It is important to clarify that the investigation does not necessarily mean that mobile operators were hacked or that customer databases were breached. Authorities are investigating how unauthorized registrations occurred and how citizens’ identity information may have been used.

What Can Users Do?

Mobile users can take a simple step to check whether any unknown numbers are registered in their name.

📱 Use the My NTRA application: The “My Numbers” (أرقامي) service allows users to check the mobile lines registered using their National ID.

🚨 If an unknown line appears: Users should visit the relevant mobile operator’s branch and request information and appropriate action, including cancellation if the line does not belong to them. If the issue is not resolved, a complaint can be escalated to the National Telecom Regulatory Authority through 155.

🪪 Protect copies of your ID: When providing a copy of your National ID to a trusted organization, consider clearly writing the purpose, organization, and date on the copy. This does not guarantee protection, but it can help reduce the risk of the copy being reused for another purpose.

A mobile number is increasingly becoming part of a person’s digital identity. Checking which numbers are registered under your name is a simple step that can help protect against identity misuse and fraud.
