Unleashing Cyber Talent in the MENA Region with “Code Breaker” – An OSINT Capture the Flag Competition
As the president of ISSA Egypt, I am thrilled to announce an upcoming event that promises to ignite cyber talent across the MENA region: the Code Breaker Capture the Flag (CTF) competition. This initiative is more than just a competition; it’s a step forward in our commitment to build and nurture cybersecurity expertise, in line with ISSA’s vision to equip the region with skilled professionals who can tackle the most sophisticated cyber challenges.
Why Code Breaker?
The digital age brings unique security challenges, and addressing them requires skilled minds and a proactive approach. The Code Breaker CTF is designed to push participants’ boundaries, combining technical and analytical prowess with real-world application. Through this competition, we aim to create an environment where emerging cyber talents can showcase their skills, tackle complex scenarios, and experience the thrill of OSINT (Open Source Intelligence) in action.
A Global Platform with Local Impact
The Code Breaker CTF competition was launched during a UNODC Terrorism Prevention Branch (TPB) advanced training on Using Open Source Investigations in Counterterrorism, held in Tunisia from October 26 to 29, 2024. While the competition began in the context of high-level events like this, it will soon expand to reach a broader audience. We’re planning to bring Code Breaker to universities across the region, providing students with hands-on OSINT experience. Additionally, we’ll be hosting online editions through social media platforms, making the competition accessible to participants worldwide.
This approach not only elevates regional talent but also aligns with global cybersecurity efforts. By connecting participants with the broader international cyber community, Code Breaker provides a unique platform to share insights, strategies, and solutions that can benefit nations and organizations worldwide.
The Challenge: An OSINT-Focused Mission
Participants will face a complex, realistic case that mirrors the challenges cybersecurity professionals encounter today. They’ll need to employ advanced OSINT techniques to collect, analyze, and interpret information, all while producing a comprehensive intelligence report. This report, detailing their findings and conclusions, will be submitted to the ISSA Egypt chapter for evaluation.
To ensure fairness and rigor, we have developed a detailed assessment rubric. Reports will be evaluated on key criteria, including data collection accuracy, analytical depth, report clarity, intelligence value, and originality. This structured approach not only helps identify top talent but also guides participants on the qualities of a high-quality intelligence report.
Recognition of Excellence
To celebrate the dedication and ingenuity of our participants, we are introducing two levels of recognition:
- Certificate of Excellence: Awarded to top performers who demonstrate exceptional skill and analysis in their intelligence reports.
- Certificate of Completion: Awarded to participants who complete the challenge and submit a report, recognizing their hard work and participation.
These certificates not only validate participants’ skills but also enhance their professional reputations, establishing them as promising cybersecurity experts.
Join Us in this Journey
The Code Breaker CTF is more than an event – it’s an invitation to shape the future of cybersecurity in the MENA region. We encourage participants from diverse backgrounds, particularly students, young professionals, and anyone passionate about cybersecurity, to embrace this challenge.
Currently, Code Breaker is being held as part of international events where ISSA or its president is actively participating, including United Nations initiatives, university workshops, and government-organized training. However, an online version is in development and will soon be available, complete with participation dates and guidance on how to join. This upcoming online format will open the doors for even more cyber enthusiasts to test their skills and join this vibrant community.
Let’s come together, unlock our potential, and set a new standard for cybersecurity in the region and beyond. Are you ready to break the code?
